This week is the Discovery Channel's shark week, which has many of our guests buzzing about these toothy marine creatures. While the movie, Jaws II, was filmed in and around Destin, Florida, sharks are really misunderstood predators of the sea.

As for sharks in the wild, they are present in the Gulf of Mexico. And while there is a greater chance that you’ll be struck by lightning than bitten by a shark, it is important to be sensible when swimming in the Gulf. Here’s some tips:

1. Swim during daylight hours; Don’t swim after dusk or early morning when a shark’s vision may impaired due to low lighting. 

2. Don’t swim near fisherman or wear bait in the water while fishing.

3. Don’t wear sparkly jewelry or items that can reflect sunlight and look like the scales of fish.

4. Don’t swim if you have open wounds or are bleeding.

5. Swim within the first sandbar and always be mindful of your surroundings
