South Walton’s Coastal Dune Lakes Featured in PBS Documentary

One of the reasons South Walton's Scenic Highway 30A is so special is that it is home to 15 rare coastal dune lakes. Lakes such as these are only found in a few other places around the world, including remote parts of Africa and Australia.

Like the Florida Everglades, Florida’s Coastal Dune Lakes need protection and conservation. In support of this need, Newman-Dailey recently hosted a fundraiser for two local non-profits, which provide preservation and advocacy efforts to protect these rare coastal gems. We’re pleased to report we were able to raise nearly $3,000 for the Choctawahatchee Basin Alliance and the South Walton Community Council to support their efforts in protecting South Walton’s 15 coastal dune lakes.

For those who would like to learn more about these rare geological features, a documentary titled, "Coastal Dune Lakes: Jewels of Florida's Emerald Coast" was recently produced  by Elam & Nic Stoltzfus. A year and a half in the making, the documentary focuses on the coastal dune lakes located throughout South Walton County. The beautiful cinematography by Elam Stolzfus and music score by Eric Schrotenboer make it an evocative film that is helping to increase awareness of these lakes while informing visitors to the region how they can help protect and preserve these natural treasures for future generations.

The documentary began airing on public television stations in Florida, Alabama and Mississippi beginning in May, and will be aired nationwide on PBS in July. The documentary is also available for purchase at the Blue Giraffe art and gift shop in WaterColor.
