A Rainy Day in Destin More Fun Than a Good Day at Work

We're keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Karen, and by all indications she's simply going to give Destin some rain and high surf.

For those coming to visit this week, we're reminded by the lyrical Cat in the Hat that "even though it may be wet and the sun is not sunny, we can have lots of good fun, that is funny." The Destin Seafood Festival has been cancelled, but here's some other the fun activities to entertain and delight until the storm passes:

1.  Learn about Destin's History for Free - The Destin History & Fishing Museum is celebrating its 8th anniversary with free admission through Oct. 5. Experience the feeling of swimming in the Gulf of Mexico with award winning examples of fish caught in Destin displayed on a 100 feet of wall space depicting the Gulf floor.

2. Hang with the Animals - If you haven't been to the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park in a while (or ever) this is the perfect excuse to visit after their $3 million renovation and expansion last year. The animal ambassadors including dolphins, penguins, otters, sea turtles, alligators and many others will delight and educate visitors of all ages. On Sat. Oct. 5, the Gulfarium is hosting the Exotic Pet Amnesty Day from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in which they will be accepting any exotic species that are need of a new home. Who knows who you may see?!?

3. Shop 'Til You Drop - One of our favorite pastimes is exploring the one-of-kind boutiques, consignment stores, antique shops and art galleries that are sprinkled all along the Emerald Coast. Download the 30A Art Map from Artists of 30A to enjoy a self-guided tour of the many galleries along Scenic Highway 30A. Or stay in one spot with a visit to Silver Sands Premium Outlets and enjoy more than 100 stores with the latest designer fashions and wildly discounted prices.

4. Take in a Movie - There are lots of great new films hitting theaters this weekend and Destin's movie theater options have been enhanced. The AMC
Destin Commons 14
is the area's only digital theater offering REAL D -The Premier Digital 3D Experience, true stadium seating in all 14 auditoriums, innovative digital sound systems and tons of leg room between each row. In addition, t
he Lively Cinema 10 in Destin is going digital and features 10 theaters playing this fall's top movies. Or head down to Grand Boulevard at Sandestin to experience the NEW Carmike Cinemas Boulevard 10. The new theater features ten screens with total seating for 1,800 and includes a state-of-the-art “BIGD” auditorium and Ovation Dining Club . Of course, you could stay in your comfortable vacation rental and take advantage of the free movie rentals with your Newman-Dailey Gift Card. There no better time to watch the movie you've been wanted to see!

5. Relax - Take this time to relax and enjoy your time together. Whether you're sitting on the porch or balcony of your vacation rental watching the rain, reading a good book or visiting with friends and family it is better than the alternative. Take this opportunity to try a new drink or meal recipe that is fun to make and share with friends.

Most importantly, enjoy the precious time together! We'll be back to sunny skies soon!
