Get ready for an exciting week of creative preparations of Lionfish. This invasive species, which Destin and many Gulf coast communities are working to eradicate, is actually quite tasty. During Lionfish Restaurant week, May 8-15, local chefs will create unique dishes that prove that the Lionfish can be a culinary delicacy. Lionfish are highly invasive and can reduce fish populations and reefs by more than 90%. The Northwest Florida area has been identified as having the highest concentration of invasive lionfish in the world, according to the Emerald Coast Open. To make the event a reality, the Destin-Fort Walton Beach tourism department partners with different restaurants in the Destin-Fort Walton beach area, providing them with lionfish filets and encouraging them to "get creative." The result is a creative celebration of culinary geniuses who demonstrate this venomous fish is actually delicious.
Here's the 2022 Lionfish Restaurant Week Schedule:
Lionfish Restaurant Week is part of the Emerald Coast Open. As part of the Emerald Coast Open Pre-Tournament, the divers go out and spear Lionfish, removing them from Gulf waters and donating them to the event. So head out to our local restaurants this week and order the Lionfish special and you'll be taking part in the local effort to eradicate this invasive species while enjoying a scrumptious dinner.
